RCC Project Wins Award from Local Chapter of ACI

Pavement Recycling Services was recognized in the Flatwork Category by the Northern California and Western Nevada chapter of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) at its Concrete Construction Awards (CCA) banquet on November 9, 2021, for its work on a Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) project for Swift Transport.

Reno/Sparks, Nevada, provides one of the most challenging climatic conditions for roads and pavements. In addition, Swift Trucking can also put a beating on their pavements with the constant truck loadings. When you put the two together, you can understand why a hardy and durable material was in order for their 1455 Hulda Way trucking facility rehabilitation project.

Being a nationwide company, Swift is very familiar with up-and-coming pavement technologies. Having selected RCC as their go-to material on other facilities, it seemed like a natural fit for this project.

Wulfenstein Construction served as the General Contractor. Andale Construction tapped PRS for the RCC paving construction itself. Then a cohort of local and national experts convened to develop the mix designs. Nevada Cement provided the glue to bring this project together.

Once work was underway, dozens of local engineers, labs, contractors, and providers came from private industry as well as NDOT to see the construction. The ability to pave concrete that you can walk on and put a roller on, immediately, is something folks have to see to believe.

The paving itself was quite a large acreage facility, and took several days to complete. The project marked the first RCC project in Nothern Nevada, including the concrete mix/material.

The RCC produced for this project was batched locally using a mobile pugmill plant owned by PRS. The mix was somewhat revolutionary for the area as 4,000 psi strengths were able to be achieved using less than 500 pounds of total cementitious material.

Mixes used either 475 or 500 pounds of Nevada Cement’s local Fernley I/II cement per cubic yard. The mixes even showed that Nevada Cement’s new Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) met strengths.

The ability to achieve such great strengths is significant for the Reno region that typically sees values between 600 – 800 pounds per cubic yard. This represented a cost savings, environmental sustainability, and likely durability increases.

As for aggregates, the project used either Spanish Springs or Q&D local aggregates. Lastly, ACEiT Plus internal admixtures were used as well as ACEiT Blue surface materials to increase workability, stabilize the moisture, and provide better workability of the RCC.
